Open Source Project and Polished Stainless Steel Jewelry

A lot has been brewing in the Improbablecog sweatshops the last few weeks so here's a long update on it all.

First off, I launched a Kickstarter project about two weeks ago to fund the open source release of the Wing Earrings, Tendril Pendant, and Carapace Ring.
The project has reached it's goal, and in three days will end. At that point, the models for those pieces of jewelry will be uploaded to this site, Thingiverse, and will have their prices cut to just cost (no markup) at my Shapeways store. These pieces will then cost $10.20, $7.20, and between $4 and $7 (depending on ring size).

I would like to make the rest of my jewelry available through this open source model as well. For the next three days, you still have an opportunity to contribute to the Kickstarter project and release additional pieces. Once that ends, I will either be running another Kickstarter or using a different method to collect funding to release the other items. I will probably be doing 2-3 per month until every current item in my line is open sourced, and thereafter new items will be put up for funding once they are created.

Once items are open sourced, I will be replacing them in my Etsy store with a premium line that have been hand polished and represent a significant amount of additional work to create beyond what you get if you buy the free version from the Shapeways shop. Keep in mind that if you want to, you can order the raw version to grind and polish yourself or finish in any way you see fit. However, buying it from me means that you don't have to hunch over a workbench for hours at a time to have shiny jewelry :)

Here are the first polished items, for your perusal. All of these can now be purchased from my Etsy store!

Robohamster!

Oh science gone horribly awry! While trying to create a new breed of cyborg killbots, the (possibly inebriated) Division of Biotech Tinkering accidentally created the adorable, and entirely non-lethal, Robohamster.

Having no marketable planetary invasion skills, the prolifically replicating (you don't want to know...) critters have instead been boxed up to sell as odd little pets.

Palm sized and printed in multiple colors of durable 3D fabricated plastic, you can have your very own Robohamster today!

$50 + shipping. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery to allow for replication time.
Payment can be made securely through Paypal below.

Choose Your Color!

..........signal override..................please stand by for an important announcement.....

Do you want Robohamster to be freed from corporate slavery and released for everyone to enjoy?

Donate to the Free Robohamster fund today!

If our goals are met to raise $1000 before the end of August, Robohamster will be release under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license. In addition:

-  All 3D models will be downloadable for free at this website.
-  Will be uploaded to Thingiverse, an online repository of digital designs.
-  Will be made available to print at cost (~$20, depending on material), with $0 markup on Shapeways.

Contribute as little or as much as you wish, and tell your friends about the plight of this poor little abomination of science!

Please see the Modus Operandi page to learn more about why we are doing this, and watch for more Improbablecog designs, both new and old, to be released into the public domain.

Mercenary Designer for Hire

Rapid fabrication has now reached the point where you can manufacture directly from a 3D model in metal, glass, and plastics.

It has no upfront tooling costs, and you can print off as few or as many as you want. My background is in Industrial Design, with a specialization in solid modeling for rapid manufacture. I make jewelry and toys that are manufactured through Shapeways (www.shapeways.com) and sold there, at Etsy.com, and through retail outlets.

If you have an idea for a product that you're wanting to make. Perhaps merchandise for a comic book, webcomic, game title, etc. I can help you create that in 3D and get you set up to manufacture it for far less than traditional manufacturing channels.
I also do branding and packaging design, which helps to give your product that extra professional polish
